With the building of
Railway Stations there came an advertising opportunity with
walls that could be decorated and also provide an income for
the Railway Companies. These were either paper posters that
could be replaced on a regular basis or enamel signs that
were more permanent and were often very large to ensure that
the waiting travellers could hardly miss seeing them.
Advertising enamels
were used throughout the Country particularly inside and
outside of shops and many of these are very collectable
today as they were often fairly small and so relatively easy
to display. Very popular are are signs advertising Sprats
products some of which are pictured below.
This
is another area of Railwayana Collecting where there are people who
are just interested in Advertising enamels per say and others who
collect signs that refer to their particular Collecting field such
as Tobacciana.
